Fair question! My name is Samantha and I am the Owner and Director of Operations for The Thrifty Stylist! I was born in New York and grew up in Dallas Tx.
I moved to Chicago,IL the year after I graduated from high school. I went to Culinary School at the Illinois Art Institute! After graduating I went to work for Kimpton Hotels. There I did everything from prep to Kitchen Manager. I love to cook (and to eat) and really love working with people and that is exactly what I have searched out for in my career. I would go on to work from some really great companies and was able to operation full service, fast casual, and airport operations.
In 2016 I took a position with an operation call Avero. I was working with hospitality employees giving support and training in restaurant software. The company was amazing and gave me my very first Monday to Friday schedule. They also gave me the first chance in my life to not have a uniform. I felt reborn!
I was so excited to get the chance to express myself in this new way! Having had only uniforms to wear for 12 plus years I did not have a lot of business clothing that I could wear to my new office and when meeting clients. I really believe that was the moment that made me think about anything like Thrifty Stylist.
As I began to try and build a new wardrobe I was pleasantly surprised by how easy that was and how many choices I had. What do I mean by that? Well, I am a six foot two plus size woman. I grew up struggling to find clothes that fit and did not make me appear much older.
So when it came time to shop I was smart enough to look at second hand clothing first as I always remembered how expensive plus size clothing was! That first shopping trip is what sent me on this path. I was able to go into almost any second hand store and find items that not only fit but were stylish! Those two characteristics alone would prompt me to buy something brand new, but now, I have access to well treated second hand clothing that is a mere fraction of what a plus woman would spend on new clothing. Not to mention the ease at which I could find shoes and accessories.
After a year or so shopping for myself and my sisters, I had an idea. I wanted to find a way to showcase just how much money I could save and how stylish I could be at the same time as a plus size woman. I would share my treasures by word of mouth but knew that there was a larger group of people whom needed to hear and see it!
I decided that I would take my love for fashion, saving, and helping the plus size community and turn it into not only my career but my number one passion.
